Our NAIT Story
We were diagnosed with NAIT during my 2nd pregnancy in 2020. We already had a healthy 3 year old. At my 20 week scan, they noticed our baby’s right ventricle was measuring larger than it should be. We were referred to fetal medicine who took some bloods from me and husband to run so tests and in the meantime we’d be monitored and an MRI for our baby would be booked.
The blood test came back showing we have incompatible antibodies and we were diagnosed with NAIT. We were then referred to haematology and started weekly IVIG treatment and steroids to try and prevent any further damage to our unborn babies platelet count. We had our MRI scan and the results came back showing there was quite a bit of damage to our baby’s brain, especially at the back and they were unsure if he would survive or what sort of life he would have. At this point, we made the very hard decision to end our pregnancy and at 29 weeks our little boy, baby bob was born sleeping. 19.2.20.
We always knew we would want to try and have another baby and finding NAITbabies and reading other people’s stories filled us with hope! We knew we were in the 100% group so future pregnancies would be affected.
In November 2020, I found out I was pregnant! As soon as I could I contacted the same fetal medicine team we had been under. They were supportive, even though they didn’t have much experience in dealing with other NAIT pregnancies. We made a plan and started IVIG at 12 weeks, at 20 weeks we started IVIG twice a week. I was scanned every month and they would check my baby’s brain and as much else they could. The pregnancy was hard and full of the unknown. The decision was made to deliver our baby at 37 weeks. On 23rd June 2021 our beautiful rainbow baby, Alexander was born with a platelet count of 254,000. Treated pregnancies work!!
